| Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) Church Sonata in A, Op.3/12 Grave – Allegro - Adagio Allegro – Adagio Allegro – Adagio Allegro – Adagio Allegro Arcangelo Corelli was born at Fusignano near Imola and was one of the first true virtuosi of the violin. After studies in Bologna he settled in Rome around 1685 and lived and worked there, in the household of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, for the rest of his life. A modest and even-tempered man, the passion and brilliance of his violin technique and the compositions in which he enshrined it made him famous throughout Europe; Handel, Scarlatti, and Locatelli, as well as the King of Naples and Queen Christina of Sweden, queued to pay him their respects. This sonata is the last of a set of twelve published in Modena in 1689 and originally intended for church performance, where a chamber organ would take the place of the harpsichord used today.
